The Southern Resident Killer Whales are endangered under the Endangered Species Act. There are currently 73 remaining, and face problems such as noise and disturbance, prey population, and pollution and contaminants. The whales reside in the Pacific Northwest, ranging from Alaska to California. During the summer, they live in the Salish Sea and Puget Sound. Their population has dwindled to a low of 73 individuals, divided into three pods: J (25 whales), K (15 whales), and L (33 whales). Ocean-sun, known as L25, belongs to the L pod. While other killer whales, such as the Bigg's killer whales (with a population of approximately 380), also inhabit these waters, they do not face the same critically low numbers as the Resident whales.
